To | Too | Two

These three homonyms are occasionally muddled up.

  • Two is the number. You may well prefer to use the numeral 2 instead, but remember that in academic writing you should spell it out.
    • The two men looked very tired.
    • Two times two equals four.
  • Too is used with adverbs and adjectives:
    • It is too late to go out now.
    • I would like to buy it, but it is too expensive for me.
  • To is used with verbs in the infinitive, and in a sense of 'towards'
    • Would you like to look?
    • I take the bus to work now.

Generally it's easy to remember when to use which spelling - most people fall foul of this when distracted, or accidentally typing an extra letter. Remember - a spellchecker or a grammar checker will not pick up on this, so take care to thoroughly check your work for simple mistakes like this.
