You and I? You and me?
Despite what you might have heard, you and me is a perfectly acceptable construction in English. The myth that it is not acceptable has come about because many people when speaking use you and me exclusively, even when you and I is the correct form. This has led to the assumption that you and me cannot ever really be correct, and that you and I is the correct form.
Like many of the rules of English, there is an easy rule to decide which form to use when writing. Simply discard the you in your sentence and try the same sentence with 'I' or 'me'.
- I shall go for a walk later (You and I shall go for a walk later)
- Me shall go for a walk later (You and me shall go for a walk later)
This method makes it quite clear which form you should use, something which the full form can disguise due to the commoness of the you and me form in colloquial speech and the perceived correctness of the you and I form.
